Sensing Lisbon
From residents to co-stewards of place.
Many of us arrived in Lisbon looking for a beautiful life. It took longer to notice we were living on the surface of it.
Lisbon has never looked more beautiful, and something essential is fading away — the river, the green corridors, the rhythms of the old city. Together with Michelle Holliday, we called a first gathering of international residents — 24 participants from 11 countries — who love the city and know they are collectively straining it. And we began where the discomfort was sharpest: what if this is not a problem to be solved but a calling to recognise ourselves as part of the city’s living tissue?
Rather than designing a programme to give back, we spent two days learning to listen first — including a solo walk through a neighbourhood most of us had never entered, acknowledging the distance between doing good and sensing what a place is actually asking for, exploring what it means to be not merely a social club or networking group but a vibrant and impactful “learning ecology”. A stewardship group is now forming.
You cannot practise reciprocity with a place you have not yet met.
